A person armed with a baseball bat and demanding to see Representative Gerald E. Connolly, Democrat of Virginia, attacked and injured two employees aides in a rampage contained in the congressman’s Fairfax, Va., workplace, the most recent episode in a surge of political violence throughout the nation.

Xuan Kha Tran Pham, 49, of Fairfax, was dealing with costs for one depend of felony aggravated malicious wounding and one depend of malicious wounding, based on the Fairfax City Police Department. He was being held with out bond.

Speaking later to reporters on Capitol Hill, Mr. Connolly stated the attacker struck one among his senior aides within the head with the steel bat, and hit an intern within the aspect — on her first day on the job.

“Imagine your first day in the office,” a person “comes in with a baseball bat and beats you,” Mr. Connolly stated.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the highest Democrat within the House, known as the assault “horrific.”

“We are grateful for the members of law enforcement and medical professionals who swiftly acted to apprehend the suspect and care for the affected members of our Capitol Hill community,” Mr. Jeffries stated. “The safety of our members and of our staff remains of paramount importance, particularly given the increased instances of political violence in our country.”

Mr. Jeffries stated he requested the House sergeant-at-arms and the Capitol Police to “take every available precaution to protect members and our staff, who serve the American people with patriotism and passion and deserve to do so without fear for their safety.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated he had reached out to Mr. Connolly after the assault. “We’re all praying for the quick recovery for the staffers injured and grateful for the quick actions of the law enforcement who apprehended the suspect,” Mr. McCarthy stated.

The assault comes amid a rise in threats and violent political speech towards members of Congress in recent times. In October, an intruder bludgeoned Representative Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, with a hammer inside their San Francisco house after the attacker shouted, “Where is Nancy?”

Last month, J. Thomas Manger, the Capitol Police chief, testified on Capitol Hill in regards to the heightened risk local weather throughout the nation.
