Late final yr, Fayçal Ziraoui, a French-Moroccan enterprise advisor, was at his residence within the Paris suburbs scrolling by means of satellite tv for pc footage of the Sierra Nevada when he got here throughout a picture that startled him.
It was a set of rocks arrayed in a means that resembled the cross hairs of an enormous gun sight — a circle with a cross by means of it — surrounded by a bigger circle. It seemed to him just like the image that the Zodiac killer used on his correspondence a half-century in the past.
One of my colleagues in The New York Times’s Paris bureau, Constant Méheut, wrote about Ziraoui two years in the past and his curiosity within the case of the Zodiac, the spree of murders that terrified the Bay Area. In December, Ziraoui searched satellite tv for pc photos of the Sierra after believing {that a} postcard and a cipher despatched by the Zodiac killer pointed to these coordinates.
Ziraoui spent the winter counting down the times till the snow melted, and in mid-May, he flew to San Francisco. I traveled with him to the positioning west of Lake Tahoe. It’s a four-hour drive from the Bay Area, the final dozen miles on tough filth roads blocked at occasions by the remnants of collapsed timber killed within the 2014 King fireplace.
We reached the positioning by driving up a rock-strewn stretch of street that you just may see in a business for four-wheel-drive autos, a steep grade to the highest of an unnamed small plateau, elevation 6,000 toes, overlooking the Hell Hole reservoir. Despite the identify, it’s an idyllic spot with patches of sunshine purple and yellow wildflowers and a view of the snowy peaks that encompass Tahoe.
The outer circle of the rock formation is about 25 toes large, and a number of the stones are sufficiently big that it seems as if just a few individuals could be wanted to maneuver them. Inside the interior circle have been varied objects: a small-caliber bullet, some shattered eyeglasses, three items of obsidian and a poker chip. Outside the circle a path of rocks pointed north.
After visiting the positioning, Ziraoui spent days attempting to know who may be behind the rock formation and whether or not it had any connection to the Zodiac killer. He confirmed footage of the positioning to an archaeologist on the native U.S. Forest Service workplace, who stated he had by no means seen the place and was not conscious of anything like that within the space. He researched drugs wheels — spherical symbols utilized by many native tribes — and contacted the United Auburn Indian Community, a bunch of Miwok and Maidu tribal members within the space. A spokesman for the United Auburn preservation division stated the tribal group had no information of the positioning and declined to have a look at images of it.
Maybe hikers had put the rocks collectively? Or was it lovers? Inside the circle was a clean rock with a professional-looking engraving: “Cal & Margaret Together Forever.”
The seek for the Zodiac killer has spawned a cottage business of sleuths, every with their very own notions of the best way to crack the Zodiac codes and their very own theories on the identification of the killer. With every new “revelation,” a powerful dose of skepticism appears warranted.
For Ziraoui, researching the Zodiac killer began as a bored-at-home interest through the pandemic. When he spoke with The Times two years in the past, Ziraoui had concluded by means of his examination of one of many Zodiac killer’s ciphers referred to as Z13 that the Zodiac was Lawrence Kaye, a South Lake Tahoe resident who had been a suspect within the case. And in attempting to decrypt one other one of many ciphers, referred to as Z32, Ziraoui had give you coordinates that led him to a college in South Lake Tahoe.
Last yr, nonetheless, Ziraoui tweaked his calculations, utilizing a special calculation for magnetic north, and his new coordinates pointed to the Hell Hole reservoir. He acquired the identical basic consequence when he tried to interpret one other coded message believed to have been despatched by the Zodiac killer, in a postcard despatched to The San Francisco Chronicle in 1971.
Some Zodiac sleuths have related that postcard to the disappearance of Donna Lass, a nurse who labored at a Lake Tahoe on line casino. She went lacking in 1970 and should or could not have been a sufferer of the Zodiac killer. Needless to say, Ziraoui was intrigued to search out the poker chip on the Hell Hole rock formation, although it was not from a specific playing corridor.
Soon after Ziraoui returned to the Bay Area, he trekked to the F.B.I. workplace in San Francisco. He handed over his calculations and the coordinates of the Hell Hole web site.
Ziraoui says he realizes his decrypting efforts are simply one among many.
“You always have to keep a cool head with this stuff,” he stated. “It’s not up to me to say that this is the final word.”

Where we’re touring
Today’s tip comes from Allie Weill, who lives in Sacramento:
“One of my favorite places to visit has become Lake Natoma, about 25 minutes east of downtown Sacramento. It’s not the most picturesque or peaceful lake in California — though there’s abundant wildlife and mist on the water in the mornings, sunsets in shades of pink and views of the Sierra from just the right spot — but it is perhaps the best place to see all kinds of people delighting at spending a sunny day on the water in all kinds of ways.
There are serious kayakers and rowers gliding past in long, sleek boats. There are college kids sunbathing on paddle boards, five or six rafted together. Families venturing out in plastic rental kayaks, with a toddler between the parents, or a kindergartner learning to use a paddle for the first time. Adults paddling for the first time, too! Once, I saw a guy who had brought his pet bird out on his tiny sailboat, like a would-be pirate.
The Sac State Aquatic Center offers rentals and classes, and several state park launch areas surround the lake, making it easier than many places to get out on the water, and there are no fast-moving motorboats, making it a great place for beginner paddlers and experts alike. I love to visit for a quiet morning paddle to look for herons, bald eagles and the occasional otter, but I might like it even more when I paddle amid the joyous noise of the busy afternoons.”
