Wilko shops begin closing for good on Tuesday as family-owned retailer prepares to close down

Wilko will start shutting its doorways for good on Tuesday, because the high-street retailer prepares to shut down.

Stores throughout the nation, from as far aside as Aldershot, Falmouth and Stafford, are among the many 24 branches to close, with an extra 28 ceasing buying and selling on Thursday.

More than 1,000 employees will probably be made redundant this week, with all 12,500 of the corporate’s employees anticipated to lose their jobs as its 400 outlets shut.

It comes a day after administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) mentioned it had did not discover a purchaser for the enterprise who would take them on as Wilko outlets and retain employees, however was nonetheless attempting to promote the shops themselves.

On Monday, Sky News revealed a rescue deal for 100 outlets involving the owner of HMV had collapsed.

Last week, rival retailer B&M agreed to buy 51 Wilko stores in a deal value as much as £13m.

The premises will probably be re-branded and it’s unclear if the low cost chain will carry on or rehire any Wilko employees.

Wilko – owned by the founding Wilkinson household for many years – collapsed into administration last month underneath stress from weak client spending, fierce competitors from different low cost chains, reminiscent of Poundland and The Range, and money owed to suppliers.

All Wilko websites have continued to commerce since then to promote remaining inventory, with the retailer discounting hundreds of merchandise.
